Train Project

This section describes my undergraduate project, undertaken in the Department of Computer Science at the University of Essex in early 2007, because some people have shown interest.

I built a model railway, which was based on a radio network with independant CPU-controlled trains and signals. The code was written from bottom up in C, implementing a 4-layer network model on a Cyan eCog1k platform with RadioMetrix wireless modems.

The project aimed to make the trains and signals intelligent, paving the way for further automation research. Ultimately the project did work, but lacked junctions and train localisation features.

  • See downloads for PDF copies of the final presentation and one that I gave to the IET earlier in the year.
  • Purpose describes why I did the project and what it was meant to solve.
  • Solutions gives a quick overview of what the project involved.
  • Review looks at the end result.
  • Thanks To lists some of the people who contributed in some way.
