Standards and COTS communication systems work well for many. But there are plenty of problems that they don't solve. Or they solve those problems badly.
Rural communities, noisy industrial sites, fast moving vehicles, legacy systems, cost sensitivity, high stakeholder expectations, power limitations. Sometimes standards and COTS just won't do.
Is evidence needed to make a decision? Does a project need to be rescued? What does an emerging solution actually behave like? How could a custom solution be delivered? Can COTS be blended with a little bespoke?
Those are the projects that need a personalised approach to communications engineering.
